Australia: Payments Association Welcomes Passage of Digital ID Bills

Australian Payments Plus (AP+) has issued a statement on the passage of the Digital ID Bill in the Senate. The bill passed the Senate without debate.

The legislation aims to establish an accreditation path for entities providing digital ID services while expanding the Australian Government Digital ID System. It will also provide privacy safeguards, establish the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as the Digital ID Regulator, and expand the role of the Information Commissioner in regulating privacy protections for digital IDs.

AP+ was created by Australian domestic payments companies, including BPAY Group, eftpos, and New Payments Platform. The goal is to guide the future of payments for Australia.

AP+ Chief Executive Officer Lynn Kraus described the bills as another step forward in Australia’s journey towards a more secure and inclusive digital future.

“Through ConnectID, businesses benefit from knowing their customers’ identities are authenticated by a trusted source and consumers can rest assured they are sharing less data. Once in place, the digital identity framework will open new opportunities for productivity and provides enhanced security for people’s personal information. As Australia furthers its digital transformation, AP+ and ConnectID are excited to be part of the journey, leveraging the benefits of the digital identity system to deliver greater functionality and security for consumers and businesses in Australia,” stated Kraus.

ConnectID is a digital identity solution that aims to facilitate data exchange, allowing businesses to verify their customers’ identity securely.

The bill will be introduced to the House of Representatives in the next sitting period.
